Teamworking

In this blog post, I’ll discuss the teamwork I did with my marketing group and with my classmates.

Psychometric Test

For the Psychometric test, our class had to watch an orchestra play. We were then handed a sheet of paper with a list of different people who made up the orchestra, we wrote if we think we are most and least likely to like them in normal teamworking and then who we want to be.

All these were taken in, and we were assigned to a group of three. Unfortunately, I can’t remember what orchestra team I got, but our group worked well together. The group consisted of Kate, me, and Alistair. We were assigned to make a short stop-motion video about anything using these wooden figures we could move. During this teamwork, I learnt that every opinion and idea matters and setting tasks for each of us makes the work much easier. Kate was a great leader and came up with the idea of our character kicking a football. Then, we all pitched ideas about how the storyboard’s beginning, middle, and end should go.

Overall, this was fun and great to do something different and physical instead of on a computer.

The Marketing Group

For the Edecks live brief, I was grouped with a large marketing group that consisted of 6 people. At first, it was confusing as when we first met, the group didn’t even know about Edecks yet and knew nothing about us, graphic designers as well. After the confusion was cleared up, I met with my group. However, only one person showed up. In this meeting, I was told about their campaign idea, which consisted of the slogan “Party All Seasons”. I wasn’t sold on this idea, but the guy in the group explained that they’re focusing on selling to B&BS, where they have many parties. So their idea was to promote decking outside for these parties during the winter period.

They needed a poster based on their idea for the background of their presentation. They already made one using AI, with the slogan at the top and an AI image of a decking party during winter. They still asked me to make them a poster; however, I made two.

Poster 1.
Poster 2.

I tried out two different designs with the same background of a party at a B&B. The first poster is more corporate, with lots of text so the audience knows what the campaign is all about. I purposely made the slogan off the page a bit to make the layout more interesting.

The second poster is heavy on the visuals. I cut out snowflakes onto an orange rectangle so you can see the imagery peeking through the snowflakes. The bright colours contrasted with the snowflake visuals make it more vibrant, which is what we want from a party.

I sent these to the group but didn’t get a response until days later, and they didn’t really seem to be bothered by them or use them. They changed their idea a lot, so I didn’t do much work with them because they weren’t solid on an idea yet. I had one last meeting regarding the final campaign video they had to make; everyone was there this time, and they explained their idea to me. Before this meeting, I believed the graphic design students didn’t have to help with their video, but a last-minute change of plans ensured we did. However, during this discussion, other people in the group didn’t like the video idea and were up for having a new idea, so I couldn’t really help other than advise on what I think is the best idea. They also told me their teacher wanted this video to include her students acting in it with little visuals. I offered to make an intro and outro, but they weren’t interested, so I didn’t do any more work for them.

Overall, the experience was confusing at times but valuable. Luckily, my marketing group was lovely and understanding. However, it did not work for me because my group never landed on a solid idea they all liked, as working in a big group can be hard. Doing group work can be stressful enough, but I believe adding other elements like us, graphic design students, just confused them. At the end of it, they still didn’t know what we did, even though I had explained the aspects that graphic designers cover. However, they found it to be of no use due to AI.
